studio brief 3 project proposal

initial project proposal:
i was torn between 2 ideas for my printed pictures brief, and also which process would suit which idea best.

idea 1:
5-10 prints of repeated pattern that represents aspects of Carrolls life and/or literature work though chosen motifs. i would choose themes for each print e.g.1st print- carrolls eating disorder and links to theme in alice in wonderland 'eat me' - i would concentrate on creating a repeated pattern of biscuits/other foods with this sign on.
2nd print- concentrating on idea of sense of identity- using a repeated pattern of keys and key holes to represent the the many personalities and the idea of how he can't unlock certain areas of he's life and go back (childhood)

i think a screen print would be suitable for this technique as i will be easier to print multiple times. (repeat the pattern)
however i am unsure how i would get the detail i am looking for within the mofits with a screen print.
developing on....

idea 2:
a zine/book to show lewis carrolls imagination as a image/figure/object changes into something else.
themes: imagination, magic, change, childhood
i would like to use etching for this idea as it will allow me to focus on detail and texture.
developing on....

proposal review with peer review.

though my group thought both ideas of creating a zine to show imagination and a couple of prints to draw repeated patterns of motifs to represent aspects of carrolls life was a good idea and worked well as a set, i worry that i maybe setting myself to much work to develop on both instead of just focusing on one and making it the best i can, especially when the brief is only asking for one of them.  i decided to ask other people for advise for which one they thought would be more appropriate.
  • hannahs thoughts on zine of imagination idea:shows a more in-depth theme/look into Carroll and/or he's personality in a creative way.
  • thoughts on print collection idea: people may not understand/ appreciate the concept/ideas behind the drawings and how they link to lewis carroll.
  • though etching would be the best process to capture the detail in the repeated motifs, this will be a lot of work to produce a number of repeated motifs and 5- 10 different themed prints.
  • expensive.

I am very happy i talked to hannah as she pointed out things i did not account for with the repeated pattern idea, and also made me more enthusiastic about the zine imagination idea. i now feel i have many ways i could expand on the idea - such as i could incorporate the theme of nonsense when illustrating imagination, also the layout of the zine/book, i could perhaps set it up so you can see the begging and end image on the front page and then open it out to see the imagination process.
