Shout (alessandro gottardo

really clever concepts which on first glance are nonsense to viewer/me. this is something i want to achieve in my prints, to puzzle the viewer straight away with what they mean.
even though these illustrations might not have a meaning, i find it interesting how we, well i, always assume art work does.should have a reason behind it, when it could just be something interesting or nice to look at.
i epecially like the simplicity of the swan/questionmark piece, the motifs are clearly recognisable without over complicating them. - i.e. we can tell its a swan from the beak and neck. also the colours used -black- denotes to use straight away that it is a black swan, connoting the negative associations with black swans compared to a white swan.

i wanted to show how lewis carroll imagination used to change people into animals etc based on personality - e.g the dodo character in alice in wonderland is said to be based on himself due to characteristics he links to the animal - he's stammerer 'dodo'
however i did not want to use a photograph/printed picture of a person, however i also knew it would take to long to draw the portrait using dragon frame to show the process of the drawing being made and then the process of it changing, so i have decided to draw the portrait in the same drawing style of the rest of the drawn sequences and then i will add the imagination drawing on-top showing the process.

playing around compositions of image sequences on after effects.

playing around with backgrounds to create a stronger concept, i added the pages of alice in wonderland. however i feel this conceals the illustrations/animations and therefore i dont think the stop motion is appreciated as much as you can't see the detail gone into the work.

OVERALL AIM- promote Propercorn - intentions
specific aims - audience/context/outcomes
objectives- actual outputs - what is the thing that is going to be there.

be SMART
Specific - what needs to be done
Measurables-speciific success criteria
Acheivables-resources, scope, scale within your capability - but is it achievable by someone else? - i.e billboards - i can't achieve it but others can.

Realisitic- can it be realistically done
Time conscious -

use words from Brief - proves I've read it and qulitfies decisions I've made
justify the NEED for my proposal- evidence to support my argument/idea

describe your audience:
location?
lifestyle ?
which industry?
what values do they have?
why will they engage with it?

describe my motivations
why am i doing it?
financial?
creative expression ?
my opinion- find it hard to find something that will tie me over until meal times without it being unhealthy

who's going to be reading it?
the people at propercorn are young!!
ue appropriate tone
dont repeat myself
ask people to check grammar and spelling

start from the end point

except that the person reading the brief knows nothing about me, skills, context of project
explain everything!!

'reward yourself for a job done properly'

Angeleic stands - point of sales

research advertising campaigns - true blood

timeline idea - could be shown on train carriages, buses

train station - a stand of propercorn 'no time for breakfast' 'healthy feel good snack to get you through a journey'

breif title:
brief: create a campaign which shows scenes that proper corns target market (20-35yr young professionals, time-poor, urban, health conscious) can relate to with the idea that the people in the scenes are doing them 'properly' as they are eating propercorn. i.e watching a film, writing essays.

product: a advertising illustrated campaign

tone of voice: uplifting, angelic, fun, on trend,  simple line with bursts of colour (not in the lines) main colour on the propercorn packets and logos.

audience:  20-35yr young professionals, time-poor, urban, health conscious

context: in places propercron target markets would exists: journeys-trainstations, bus stations, cafes, uni, shopping centres cities.
campaign shown on:
  • on buses
  • billboards
  • shopping centre inside changing billboards
  • train carrages etc

additional information/considerations: exaggerate scenes? humorous?

mandatory requirements: ideas which are commercially viable, faithful to brand, encouraging.
deliverables: a pitch board advertising my campaign idea- illustrations that i have visually put into certain campaign scenareos

if you dont get a brief down and sent- clients might take advantage and ask for more.
BRIEF IS A CONTRACT

2 WEEKS TIME:
based on brief bring 3 to 5 a3 presentation boards that visually communicate my proposal.
contextual references, brief tone of voice, where it could exists

questions i would want answering by brief

what type on campaign would work best/format?
do they want it to describe/illustrate something being 'done properly'or to illustrate scenes that target market/audience.
digital or hand made preference?
whats the most important thing you want highlighting
would you rather it be subtly advertised with a strong concept/narrative
or focused more on the brand?

simple ideas of nonsense scenes

this could be made into a consitenna book or used as 6 separate prints

dragon frame processing animation image sequences

Tutorial with Fred

points from tutorial on Printed pictures:

concept is strong but looses impact when trying to take it into/split into 5 prints.

liked the idea i was pondering on - Incorporating a question mark to create a stronger concept of  Carroll's struggle with he's own identity and also links to questions which are thought up when reading he's literature and other works - e.g slices adventures in wonderland- why would a flamingo be a golf stick, why is the rabbit dressed as a person etc.

how to overcome print sizes/composition
thought the most successful print size is the long thin print from my original idea of 5 prints - could potentially increase the length of the print and turn it into a consatena book to fit the brief (- printed book/zine).
a consiteena  of wonderland
i would randomly add the shape of question marks using negative space though out the print.
OR
to fit the brief of a product, create a few a3 prints which can then fold down into a a6 piece, so when unfolded the concept would be opening a map of wonderland/ a map of lewis carroll.
this style will emphasise he's vivid, over-thought, massive imagination.
i would incorporate a question mark with negative space in each print.
OR
simplify it down!!
from looking at tester work of ideas, fred suggested stripping back some of the complexity of my ideas in order for me to be able to produce a finished piece i would be happy with and not feel (As much) under pressure to finish it in the time left on the brief. he suggested just using a number of motifs to communicate nonsense instead of feeling i have to show a variety as the concept is easily shown through a few. i.e

just by showing this (Above) already connotes nonsense, and does not over complicate the image.
this is a point i was weary of, especially since group crits where we discussed how if my prints were to over crowded, this would not only be a to more work, but may also not retain interest and be quite overwhelming to decode, whereas the use of negative  space may frame the drawings and make them easier to understand.
with this idea i could go back to the brief of creating prints 5 or more of simple nonsense scenes or even a book/consitena of nonsense scenes.

i was worried that by reverting back to a simpler idea would not show a in-depth body/study of work into concepts or lewis carroll himself, however fred reassured me that by blogging the ideas i have had shows my thought process and development and is good for if i wanted to come back to this idea and develop further when i have a project with more time i.e 3rd year project. - SAVE IT!

Moving Pictures Points:
simplify down, take inspiration from initial printed pictures idea of a number of nosence/imaginated scenes happening on the same page. each animation sequence (each object) should show imagination process with a ongoing pattern (onces one imagination process on a object has finished another object will come onto the sheet until the sheet it full of objects and imaginations)
could potentially play around with the idea of showing making the question make shape in negative space with the space which is not filled up with the objects and imagination process.

choosing which print plate to use

i produced these test prints using clear plastic. though this were perfect to see through to copy my drawing, the plastic was quite thick which made it harder to take through the print press which increases the risk of the plate snapping in half when taking it through the press. another problem i had with this plait is that though it felt smooth, it was not as polished as the white plate which meant it was hard to wipe all the ink off the plate i did not want, making the final print look quite grubby.

below i have testing on more plastic. i choose this plastic because again i could see through and also it is more flexible and thinner therefore will be easier to take through the press.

again i found this very hard to remove all the excess ink. this print seemed to have a rougher texture which meant the ink got stuck in the grains leaving a grainy texture when printing. to make sure i wasn't ruling this plate out to soon i did a second tester next to my first (the lighter mark above) and removed more ink (as much as i could) however though this made for a less grubby print, it got rid of the ink out of the groves so the etch lost detail.

what to do next: i think my best bet is to go with the clear plate but to find one which is smoother (more polished) to make it easier to remove excess ink.

quotes that inspired my prints and animation

I can't go back to yesterday - because I was a different person then.

Who in the world am I? Ah, that's the great puzzle.

Everything's got a moral, if only you can find it.

Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.

“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?”

this is the quote that i categories all my prints under.

quick thumb/sketch of my animation composition and process.

to incorporate more aspects of carrolls life i thought i would experiment with using after effects to add shapes which links to he's maths/geometric background. i thought this would add a different dimension to my animation idea as the majority of it will be hand drawn and captured using dragon frame as i don't have much skills when it comes to after effects.

my idea is to have shapes in the background moving in and out of my animation.

testing stop motion of ideas to see if they could be successful.

idea of showing mirror cracking in stop motion

thinking of more objects which have relevance to film animation frame/composition.

i thought about using the mirror which connects to he's literature work - through the looking glass.
above i have developed the idea of the mirror smashing and distorting the perfect glass and therefore destroying the reflection it would have reflected. this idea is to connote lewis's struggle with sense of self and he's struggle with identity.

though i think the idea is strongly linked with Lewis Carroll, it doesn't really show a imagination process happening to the mirror, it is more a process that would realistically happen rather than something completely nonsense.

Ornate magnet trio - vintage silver plate fork, spoon, and knife set on Etsy, $28.00
to connote negative relation ship with food, use cutlery and zoom into the fork where i can animate a person trapped behind the bars to represent jail.

thinking about how to add the colour to my etchings

researching ways to add colour onto my etchings
as i want my pieces to look vibrant and magical to connote Lewis Carrolls vivid imagination and magical nature of he's work, i wanted the colours to be bold like this piece about, i like how this piece is like a explosion of colour that can't be contained in lines- much like he's over active imagination, however i feel there is to much colour on this piece, i want to have minimal colour to make the colour i do have stand out to create certain focal points. i also only want to use a mixture of 2 colours on the motifs i chose to colour, and these colours will be picked to suit the mood/feeling behind/about the motif.

i prefer the subtle use of colour on this piece. i also like how this artist (sunga Park) has only added the colour to detailed parts, allowing negative space to make the detailed parks the focal point.

this is a drypoint etching with added colour - the process i want to do, however the colour has been added by adding a block of paper colour which had been transferred onto the paper.

creating nonsense scenes and playing around with composition and format

taking objects with relevance to lewis carroll and combining them to create a 'nonsense' scene.

why i choose the objects
keys - links to alice is wonderland and lewis carroll struggling sense of identity - i.e. not been able to open the door back to he's childhood
umbrella- victorian, and links to where he lived - England
garden mushrooms - nature and they are included in he's literature
top hat - fashion for victorian man
brain- symbolise he's ability and he's mother was said to have died from inflammation on the brain.
dodo and knight - characters based on himself
ruler- symbolise hes maths background
teapot- used in alice in wonderland
rugby ball- he went to rugby school as a young teenager

i decided to use photoshop to quickly layer up some images to i can work on composition and decide what object i can put with what to create a narrative and a nonsense scene.
i found this harder than i thought, though the senses i am making do not need to make scene i wanted them to imitate a actual scene - just with different absurd objects - i.e. knight riding a dodo: imitating a knight/man riding a horse.

idea to make concept stronger and to link all prints together:

"SISTER, sister, go to bed!
Go and rest your weary head."
Thus the prudent brother said.

"Do you want a battered hide,
Or scratches to your face applied?"
Thus his sister calm replied.

"Sister, do not raise my wrath.
I'd make you into mutton broth
As easily as kill a moth"

The sister raised her beaming eye
And looked on him indignantly
And sternly answered, "Only try!"

Off to the cook he quickly ran.
"Dear Cook, please lend a frying-pan
To me as quickly as you can."

And wherefore should I lend it you?"
"The reason, Cook, is plain to view.
I wish to make an Irish stew."

"What meat is in that stew to go?"
"My sister'll be the contents!"
"Oh"
"You'll lend the pan to me, Cook?"
"No!"

Moral: Never stew your sister.

My Fancy

I painted her a gushing thing,

With years about a score;
I little thought to find they were
A least a dozen more;
My fancy gave her eyes of blue,
A curly auburn head:
I came to find the blue a green,
The auburn turned to red.

She boxed my ears this morning,
They tingled very much;
I own that I could wish her
A somewhat lighter touch;
And if you ask me how
Her charms might be improved,
I would not have them added to,
But just a few removed!

She has the bear's ethereal grace,
The bland hyaena's laugh,
The footstep of the elephant,
The neck of a giraffe;
I love her still, believe me,
Though my heart its passion hides;
"She's all my fancy painted her,"
But oh! how much besides!
'But I don't want to go among mad people,' said Alice. 'Oh, you can't help that,' said the cat. 'We're all mad here.'

If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.

Who in the world am I? Ah, that's the great puzzle.

Everything's got a moral, if only you can find it.

'What is the use of a book', thought Alice, 'without pictures or conversations?'

scenes this product could be eaten that applies to target market

Add caption

i was scrolling through POPERCORNS Instagram page and came across these images, customers/employees etc  have posted, i then went on to see more pictures that people had posted hash tagging popcorn, this was really inspiring as it allowed me to see what different situations people eat Propercorn in and there reasons behind it.

one possible idea i could develop is looking at possible situations/scenes popcorns target market would eat then product/potentially eat the product. this way, customers will feel i am addressing them individually as they have a connection to that everyday scene.

eg: workspaces,
students watching Netflix
lunch breaks
coffee breaks
train journeys
gym bags
one the go bags
dates

with the ethos 'done properly' i would want customers to get the idea that by eating this product instead of others whilst engaging in these activities/scenes they are experiencing it in the best possible way.

problems i still need to face : how to emphasise the healthy aspect of the product.

i didn't want to just choose one scene as this would not emphasise the number of occasions proper corn can be eaten, however using to many i feel will over crown the campaign and therefore people may not take the time to look at it as it will be to much effort to decode.
i have focused on 4 scenes in this sketch idea- a working environment, relaxed environment, on-the-go environment and a break (coffee magazine) environment.
i have used the propercorn logo which incorporates popcorn and carried the image of the popcorn all around the page to create a boarder and to frame the scenes.

though i like the idea of showing different environments that propercorn can be eaten, i dont think the layout of this idea works, its a bit overwhelming and chaotic, making it unappealing to the eye. i think i need i need to think minimalistic, like the propercorn package design, they are simple but the colours and layout used is really effect and the information needed to promote the product it easily seen and seen first.
using the propercorn boader also overwhelms the piece with the majority of colour and detail being there.
