here i have taken Matts advice and started to work with a range of tools with different thicknesses. i have used a medium sized paint brush and ink to produce these illustrations. paint/painting is also something i would not naturally work with as it isn't as controlled as pen/pencil, however my aim for these illustrations were for them to be simple yet recognisable which i have learned from the previous
illustrations (on the line task) can be achieved with using thicker tool. i really like how the build up of lines have created shadow areas and layers-much like a onion itself. i quite like the fact that they are not 100% accurate to the photo reference i worked from either, i think it gives them a more individual effect and is also showing/ conveying my own personal view of what i have taken from looking at the photograph- for e.g. i have exaggerated the unusual rounded bumpy shape of the onion.
the first two onion shapes are using a thicker paint brush then the 3rd.
darker donut- again with thick paint brush and ink. i like how the thick dark lines makes the highlighted areas more prominent.
fine lined donut- though i have always preferred working with thiner tools i think this i a prime example of how i have realised that other tools/thicknesses of tools can be more effective for certain thinks i want to illustrate. this fine liner donut does not create as an effective contrast between lights and darks (highlights) it also looks to sketchy whereas the other looks more smooth and complete.
woman eating donut- i used the same thick tool for this image, however i am really not happy with the out come, i think the lack of control of the tool stopped me from adding the finer details to the face, though i have seen many portraits done to high recognisable standards using thicker tools, i feel my personal style does not suit/work well with thick lines when drawing faces. i am to prone to wanting to add detail.
working with ….. fine liner.
i had just bought a ….. fine liner after using one and seeing the difference in detail you can achieve with one compared to other fine liners i have had. i used the fine liner to draw the pepper, passion fruit and mushrooms. i think the pen gives a subtler finish the the drawings which is more delicate- i like this effect. though overall i like the effect the fine liner gives and will defiantly be using it in the further, i do think the pen gives quite a sharp, bitty result because of the fine sharp tip, and i would prefer a softer finish.
