shape drawings

monoprints

here i was thinking simple, and how simple shapes can create recognisable images.

i then took the idea of simple into hand drawing. breaking down the reference i was working with into 2 or 3 colours(tones)/shapes e.g. the carrot had 3- the body of the carrot (orange) the shadow indents of the carrot (dark orange) and the leaves (green) i made each of these thinks into block shapes. though this is a simple idea i do not like the result. it is not aesthetically pleasing or interesting. i think it would work better without a pen outline, this would make it less prominent and more subtle. i think it would also look better in digital as the colours would be blocked and of equal opacity. i think the idea could also work in collage.
developing on collage idea.
again focusing on simplicity to try and push myself away from detail, i decided to layer cut paper shapes to create recognisable food. my favourite is the kiwi, i like the combination of cut paper shapes and pen dots, i think there is just the right amount of pen, i feel if i added more or outlined the shape it would look to much and over complicate the illustration. i think this style would be good for a repeated print as its simple, bold and clean cut.
in the lemon slice illustration above, i like how the negative space of the white paper is effective as it provides a outline.

i have used a similar style of the lemon below using finely cut pieces of card to out line the a shape with the negative space.

using cut shape combined with pen again.
