Developing initial wedding dress idea

This is my initial idea I created when working into frames.
I wanted to develope it Because I liked the composition of the long dress trail.

I developed it by thinking about character design and ways I could show the concept of how daughters exploit their parents by settling for a partner and relying on their parents resources. I've tried to do this by making the husband look unkept.

I then tried to experiment with different frames with the same idea just incase it would be more effective.

I don't think these frames work as the idea only worked when I could show the length of the wedding dress trail... Giving the impression the parents were always 'behind' (backing) their daughter.

Developing ideas in frames

i wanted to develop my initial thumbnail of bank of mum and dad idea further.
Initial ideas without thinking about positioning in the frame.
Using same concepts-  but now thinking about using the frame to make the image. I have also tried to reduce what I show in the image- using only parts of the pig such as the tail or nose as you don't necessarily need to see the whole image of a pig to know its a pig.  -practising method used in freds workshop.

I have also tried the same idea in a different size frame to see which one works best.

putting visual concepts into frames

as i was stuggling to think of simple/ single image ideas to put into the frames using my complex words, i asked fred what type of image he would create to represent evolution, he suggested thinking about a single thing i would link/think about when thinking about the word evolution.
i chose monkey- he said to take this word and create illustrations with it.
this was straight forward, my only reservation was that i felt this way would not be fully illustrating/representing the word.

thinking about ratio's of frames when composing illustrations

this afternoon fred made us try to produce illustrations working into a set frame instead of creating illustrations and then trying to put them in a frame.
i have already tried to do this in some of my previous idea thumbnails.
he also wanted us to think about concepts, visual concepts and ideas when thinking about the type of illustration we needed to create.
the concepts we were working with were the 3 words we choose from the article, the visual concept will be the things that represent/illustrate that word and the idea will be how we use the visual concept to make the illustration.
i really struggled with this at first as my words are quite complex, therefore thinking of a single, simple visual concept for these words is quite hard.
my words were:
evolution
genetics
pea-cocking

in the image above i have tried to incorporate illustrations ideas i have already done (previous idea development) into the set frame. (landscape)

Line drawing task

i used a really fine liner here, though i am used to drawing detailed images with fine liners, i
struggled with the the concept or just drawing in lines, with out adding shading, i also felt though i spent time on theses drawings they were a bit boring.
using a thicker tool to produce line drawing: because i am used to having control on a thiner tool i thought i would push myself out of my comfort zone and only give my self a thick tool to work with, this would be hard to add small details to drawings. i used a thick cotton bud square to do this illustrations, i focused on just making shapes with this tool to try and make the food recognisable (croissant) to add shadow areas i made the ink i was working with stronger so it painted darker. this is a style i am not used to, however though it isn't detailed and accurate, it is still recognisable.
after showing this to matt he suggested that i push the technique or using different thickness of tools to see how this changes the effect and outcome of a drawing.

experimenting with mono print to create line drawings.
using mono print was a great way for me to see how lines, thick thin, jaggered, straight e.t.c can create a effective recognisable print without having to add tone/shadings, something i have always added to drawings to add realism. it has made me realise that a build up of lines can also create a shaded(highlights on mono prints) areas.

Variety of ideas

fir youst line of  Thumbnails on development sheet – looking at gender symbols and incorporating a house to symbolise when a girl and boy get married their family ( home) is still a big part of their lives – still a support.
second-line – looking into the metamorphosis of a butterfly – representing the determination of one butterfly compared to the laziness of the other, illustrating the point in the article which talks about a  Daughter who strives for the perfect man and one that settles the second-best as she knows she has to support of the family anyways.
next 2 lines  started to look at using the image of the  genetic structure  into  a illustration, using it as a ladder,  with the parents at the top, the daughter in the middle, and the potential partner at the bottom. Showing have a daughter will flit between the two for the support she needs.

for these ideas I  have focused my attention  on the concept of genes. I have used the subject matter of jeans  to give the illustrations a  humorous/literal aspect.

first line  of thumbnails – the concept behind the two pig illustrations where to show  the idea of the daughters mum and dad still supporting their daughter with resources such as money  if their daughter's partner is not doing so. (bank of mum and dad)  and then develop this illustration by adding  the daughter and the partner walking into the piggy bank (bank)  to exaggerate the exploitation of her parents and the resources they offer.
second line of thumbnails- here I basically tried to illustrate the saying handed to on a plate-  I thought this was  are appropriate phrase to link to my article- picking up on the point of the daughters exploiting their parents generosity.
Third line of thumbnails-  daughter and parents in the same genes/jeans,  and daughters partner trying to reach for her in his own genes/jeans.
for off-line thumbnails- concentrating on the phrase' attached by the apron strings'  here I am trying to show the point in the article that the parents still have a major impact on the  daughters choices.  I also thought this point could show how the daughter is still clinging onto her parents to exploit their generosity in  their resources.

here I have tried to think of a range of ideas to fit in the landscape frame.
First line of thumbnails -   concentrating on the  concept of evolution,  I have used the evolution and of the man idea,  however I have developed this idea over the three thumbnails by showing the progression of the ape to the man, the the evolution of the man from a perfect man/bad boyfriend to the bad boyfriend. I have added  think such as bunch of flowers getting progressively worse (just to a stalk)  the further down the boyfriends you go, have also experimented with adding object  to the last man my evolutionary time line  that would symbolise but boyfriend,  such as bra  slipping out of his pocket can indicate he is having an affair.
Third line of thumbnails- have this idea was using the word Peacock from the article. i was experimenting with  using the Peacocks  decrease in  attractiveness  as a metaphor to the decrease in  boyfriends qualities overtime.
fourth line of thumbnails- really like this idea as I think it  uses  the frame well.  the idea of the parents sat on the bride's wedding dress is showing how the parents will always be behind the daughter.

evolution and bad boyfriends article.

Brief:
create 3 illustrations that visually communicate a response to the article 'Evolution and Bad Boyfriends'
formats allowed:
1x 200mm x 200mm
1x 105mm x 200mm (portrait)
1x 290mm x 105mm (landscape)
the 3 illustrations must be represented as a se/series and must only use 2 colours. however stock colour is not included in the 2 colours.

over the weekend we had to read the article and pick out 5 key words that we felt represented this article and birng in images to represent the words on monday.
i chose- DNA/genetics, peacocking, evolution, pecfect boyfriend, partner

we then had to simplfy down to just 3 words/images-  chose evolution, genetics and peacocking. from these images we were set a group task to write down as many things we felt linked to these words under sub catogries of people, places, objects.starting off by thinking of words for our own word(subject) ourself then passing round the paper for other people to add words they came up with for the words(subject matter).

then from the words given, someone else had to pick words from each category which we could later hopfully turn into a illustration.

though this was a interesting way of producing ideas fast, i felt the answers given in the last activity (words to hopefully make a illustration) were too random and therefore would not sum up the article.
