progress tutorial with fred

though Fred thought my concept of celebrating the ordinary everyday was strong, he said it was to big, a project that could be explored to a massive level, possibly a dissertation project or even my practice as a illustrator when i leave, and therefore is to big for this module. he said that like my last module, i am giving myself to much, and putting myself under pressure with the amount i am expecting/setting myself up to do.

to make a more suitable subject matter, he said i needed to think of definite outcome instead of a various amount.

things we discussed:

  • to be able to call it a narrative - drawings must have a purpose :
could pairing them with quotes about the everyday or poems, or short stories

need to think about potential distribution of work:

  • could have images in a gallery/exhibition
  • could then be distributed to a book -‘unnoticed moments’ which have images matched with quotes about the ordinary.
to support release of book:-

could produce:
posters, flyers to promote the exhibition with the images

consider investigating this in a larger format of distribution:-
  • billboards,
  • add shelters
dotted around the city, getting people to stop and think. put everyday back into the environment.
by putting them back into the environment on things that are used to draw peoples attention, will be the ideal way to focus peoples attention on things they are missing and going unnoticed around them as they go about their day to day routines.

what is the reason for this ?
- to highlight, make people recognise everyday by removing it from the everyday situation it was in.

 problem of drawing objects:
i would need to pick specific themes of objects to draw as the term ‘everyday objects’ is to broad.

ideas:
emptying pockets   - concept of something you would use everyday will highlight that the objects

emptying bags  -found in these things are used and part of someones everyday.

though i like this idea, fred mentioned i have to consider audience

will this appeal to a broad audience? or would it be more steered to woman as men don't tend to carry a handbag?

my thoughts and potential way forward after tutorial
i am considering focusing my ideas of ordinary on people, and ordinary scenes we see people in, i think objects may be to broad and therefore to complex.

to capture these scenes i will go out into leeds, take pictures or anything without thinking, go home, observe, find something to celebrate in the ordinary scene by capturing it in a drawing.

WHO IS MY WORK TALKING TO?
-the person picking up the book?
