i think this technique does diferentiates the everyday scene and the moment /person i want to capture with in it with the use of colour. i think by using the colour grey emphasizes the mondane scene we all perceive a everyday day to be,  by giving the illustration a background colour, it allows the white of the paper to become to focal point. though i think this is a good way to show contest, i am not sure weather it is strong enough, or communicates the positiveilty i want my illustrations to show (finding comforting, relatable, nostalgic moments in the everyday scene we allow to go unnoticed)

To add to the pencil  tone texture I've used could pencil here, I've just added it to the collar of the man as to not over power and make the illustration subtle but noticeable, I think if I was to colour the whole of the clothing, the negative space (white) would not be as effective against the grey. I also want it to be a burst of colour to represent the special moment captured

Because I have used line as my technique for the background I have tried to carry this on in the figure drawing but used coloured lines instead to show a contrast and highlight the figure.

Making the colour on the man more loose to emphasise the burst/importance in the moment. I do like this tecnique but k think it is quite risky adding splashes of water colour on to a detailed drawing I have spent a long time on as it could easily end up being splashed on in the wrong place. To avoid this problem I might try and add the colour to the paper first and plan my drawing around it.
