Final design and design in context for allure of channel cover.

i have decided to simplify the design even further by taking off all information.  after looking at the design and putting it in the context of the book with the mandatory book information, i think the design with text over complicates the book cover and detracts attention away from the drawing,  i also think the information is not needed to illustrate that it is a fashion design template.

Replacing text

i was not 100% happy with the text that is attached to the templates, although it creates a strong sense of reality, i don't feel it is needed to communicate the idea of clothing templates, i feel the scizzor marks and measurements do this enough.

Quotes from the book:

  • I have only ever found loneliness.
  •  “My earliest childhood”. Those words, which are usually linked together, make me shudder.
  • it’s with what cannot be taught that one succeeds.
  •  I am the only volcanic crater in the Auvergne that is not extinct
  • “These colours are impossible. These women, I’m bloody well going to dress them in black.”

here i have experimented with replacing the textile information with quotes from the book, this way the context of a design template instruction is still insinuated but the quotes create a stronger link to the book.

by taking away the text that was from the textile clothing template will also make my design illustration more of a interpretation of the reference material, not an exact replica.

things i need to consider and do over easter.

research into

  • book publication
  • calendar publication
  • postcard publication
  • poster/bilboard publication
  • production methods
specifications of printing
  • scale
  • pages
  • colour
  • dpi- i.e for a billboard this will need to be scaled up so needs to be at a high resolution.
  • qauntity- need to consider printing process, i.e. screen print would bot be ideal for mass distribution. instead i plan to print digitally as i am producing a commercial prodcuct/s
distribution range - book, calandar? postcards, posters for billboards/bus shelters.
as i plan to reformat the illustrations i am using in my main product (book) i need to decide how i will reformat these illustrations to apply to the other range of products i am creating.

what i need to do

  • to try and make nostaglic work/capture nostalgic moments find out what is 'nostalgic' to different people and document.
  • thumbnail/chose images should go with what quotes. t
  • thumbnail the different contexts/ products as i will have to deal with the different size limitations and layout.
  • think about products that are given as a gift - diaries
  • specify a more specific audience as this will help me pick out more meaningful moments that they will appreciate.
  • peer review

    Defining audience.

Needs to consider audience - more mature demographic who have perhaps grown to take the everyday for granted- busy working people, young adults / the on generation who are bombarded with media and therefore everyday is a boring reality to them compared to what they see in the media everyday

Colabrative presentation Boards of project made for peer reviews

    Applied illustration

    Product:
    1 informational book (main product)
-Illustrations can/ will be applied to related products:
    • Postcards
    • Calendar
    • Individual art prints
    • adverting the books launch with posters for billboards, bus stops.

    'Happy accident'

when combing the scenery and figure together, the original size of the figure on  a  multiply layer on photoshop allowed the background scenery to show through. i really like the effect it gives, by taking the figure/unnoticed moment from the scene, enlarging it and overlaying it on top, emphasises its important, creating a focal point whilst still maintaining the  context it originally came from.

ideas for postcards (to promote the launch of the book)

i want to take crops from the book illustrations of certain parts of the illustration, this way it will not give away the illustrations you will see in the book but will promote and showcase the type of work people can expect to see in the book. in the postcards i just want to focus on just the figure, taking away the context of the scenery 'iam showing in the book. i will team the illustrations with the quotes that i am using in the book also.

    illustrative development

i did this sketch for my cop module, it is a style i have not really developed and would like to..

i tried to replicate the style above here, i thought the added bursts of colour would be an ideal way to create a focal point  to the figures, i also liked that the different depths of lines would make the figure standout, i have used a lighter thickness of pen to add detail to the face and clothing.

though i do think this technique could be developed to a professional standard, for my theme of appreciation and unnoticed moment, i think i need a technique which will allow me to capture more intricate details. i feel the pens i have used here make it hard to draw the unique features of persons face whereas with pencil i can shade and build up tone.

i think this technique does diferentiates the everyday scene and the moment /person i want to capture with in it with the use of colour. i think by using the colour grey emphasizes the mondane scene we all perceive a everyday day to be,  by giving the illustration a background colour, it allows the white of the paper to become to focal point. though i think this is a good way to show contest, i am not sure weather it is strong enough, or communicates the positiveilty i want my illustrations to show (finding comforting, relatable, nostalgic moments in the everyday scene we allow to go unnoticed)

To add to the pencil  tone texture I've used could pencil here, I've just added it to the collar of the man as to not over power and make the illustration subtle but noticeable, I think if I was to colour the whole of the clothing, the negative space (white) would not be as effective against the grey. I also want it to be a burst of colour to represent the special moment captured

Because I have used line as my technique for the background I have tried to carry this on in the figure drawing but used coloured lines instead to show a contrast and highlight the figure.

Making the colour on the man more loose to emphasise the burst/importance in the moment. I do like this tecnique but k think it is quite risky adding splashes of water colour on to a detailed drawing I have spent a long time on as it could easily end up being splashed on in the wrong place. To avoid this problem I might try and add the colour to the paper first and plan my drawing around it.

    visual journal - technique development

my idea is to create a line drawing of the background scene and then with the figures i want to highlight i will add detail with the same media to there faces. though this is a difference in technique (line contrasting with detail/shading) I'm not sure this will emphasise the moment enough.

below i have experimented with ways i can add colour/detail to the figure to make it more distinct.

    collaboration with a Photographer

i was not happy with the quality of my own photographs as i was not able to capture the detail on the figures due to the out of focus photographs which would result in my illustrations not being as strong as i would like. i decided to ask my friend will who is a photography student if he could take/or has any pictures of everyday scenes for me to observe and fine unnoticed, special moments within.

some of the photographs will took:

combing unnoticed moments to create one scene

because i struggled to get photographs that captured scenes/moments that communicated the feeling of nostalgia, comfort etc. i thought about creating a scene made up of moments i have seen in photographs i have found (not my own). this would create a made up scenery, as to not copy a specific persons photograph but would still look like a ordinary day. i would want the scene to look ordinary to begin with but through use of media i will hopefully make the moments stand out against the scene/background context.

application: i could apply this to the form of a concertina booklet so the scene would be separated into pages to emphasise on specific parts but when opened it would carry on the scene adding to the context, like a map, or panorama of a street view.

To emphasise the concept of celebrating the ordinary and unnoticed, i had the idea of partnering up the images with quotes when i wanted it in the form of a book, however when thinking about in the form of a ongoing scene in the concertina, i think adding quotes within the scene would confuse and distract attention away from the illustration. i could just use one quote to name the concertina or potentially still add all the quotes onto the back of the concertina, therefore also solving the problem of decided what to use on the back pages.

Application into the world: taking crops from the scene teamed with certain quotes. i would use the illustration to advertise the launch of the book in the form of posters that could sit in bus shelters, billboards - anywhere that is back in the environment that the original moments could of happened. i also would want to create post cards that could sell or stamps as i think this adds to the concept of celebrating the everyday, as you would usually send a postcard to someone of a scene you rarely see so its extraordinary and you want to celebrate it.

    The tetley artist book fist

going along to the tetley artist book fair made me remember how much i enjoyed the level 4 project where it was required to make a book! i love the publication of a illustrated book, theres something ornate and special about a book that encloses and maintains your work, similar to the feeling of a well kept sketch book, but with just the really nice, neat, refined illustrations.
this has made me more excited about creating a book as one of my products for 505.
seeing all the different of books, zine and concertina's has inspired me to think about the format of the book i want to create - what would be the best format to emphasise and capture my theme?

working on drawing technique for my book illustrations.

i like this line work technique i used for one of my responsive briefs, i think this would be a ideal technique to illustrate the scene the photograph was taken from simply, allowing me to add the detail to part of the image that caught my eye the most - the people.

below i have experimented with this technique with my own photography of noticed moments.
Today i went round leeds taking pictures. instead of taking pictures of something imparticular, i just pressed the camera button every so often without looking what i was capturing. the idea behind this is to go back to the images and finds things in these images i have captured that i did not notice then and there, a moment that i will never see again.
i found the process of taking the pictures very uncomfortable, at times i felt very rude taking pictures of people and i felt i was making them uncomfortable also.
though i have a few pictures that i feel have captured moments people can relate to and take comfort in the commonalities, I'm not happy with the quality of some of them, because i felt uncomfortable taking them, i took the photos quite quick therefore the focus on some is out of place.

my friend Will is studying Photography, so i asked him if he had taken any photos around leeds or in a public place that i could look and find special moments in.
i really liked these 2 images below, i feel many people can relate to the family picture, a busy day, walking to school, doing the family shop, etc, because it is so repetitive, and 'ordinary everyday' we don't see look to see beauty, humour, nostalgia, in it,  i immediately think back to my childhood with my siblings.

Freakonomics penguin book competition, development of Abbey road idea with Annotation

    Deconstructing Dress Dolly idea.

i showed my dress dolly idea idea to Fred and mentioned the problems i was having with the dress (cover to cramped with various clothing), he agreed that it was over complicated, but understood that i would need a number of different clothing's to describe the stereotypes if i wanted to represent the dress dolly 'game'. he suggested simplifying my idea right down, taking the dress dolly aspect away and maybe just using the odd object/clothing i have illustrated such as below as this is simple but still effective. i worried that this would not make sense, or illustrate various issues in the book. However Fred make me think about weather this was necessary - does everything need to be given away? it just needs to entice. therefore keeping in simple and not obvious may work better?

Above i have experimented with keeping it simple with the amount of themes/issues i illustrate but instead of illustrating objects or clothing, i thought about showing a few types of people as i enjoy drawing people.

Alice in wonderland: the books key demographic

i think my designs will appeal to the younger demographic of aged 5-9 girls as i have used bright, pastel colours, and have tried to avoid outlining with bold dark lines to keep a uplifting feel which isn't restricted, adding to the wondrous, free-flowing context of the book.
although i have directed the design to this audience, i feel it will attract gift givers due to its light hearted, enchanting and approriate feel.  i have also illustrated alice in the iconic blue and white dress, this will hopefully drawn audiences into the book who will attach the child friendly, imaginative representation of previous alice in wonderland books they themselves are familiar with.

YCN Pan Macmillan Interior page development

YCN Pan Macmillian brief - Interior page development

    first attempt at interior page.

illustrating page from Chapter 8- The Queens Croquet Ground, where alice has to use a flamingo as a stick/bat and a hedgehog as a ball.
i tried to use the loose watercolour in this illustration to create the shape of the characters, however the watercolour crinkled the paper leaving lines so the colour does not look smooth. i have tried to add detail of the characters (alice especially) using photoshop, i really don't like the effect this gives, the two techniques are to contrasting and the illustration looks odd as a whole.

adding the detail by hand. i prefer the control i had adding the detail however when scanning the illustration in, the colour pencil looks to shape and does not look nice.

summary of j20 brief and what i aim to do

    Problem:
    ·      many consumers are not aware that J2O is a blend of two fruits.
    ·      The current artwork design is not seen as 'adult' by many; the colours are viewed as bright and childish, and some consumers have even described it as cheap and 'chavvy'.
    ·      Make a design customers (adults) would be proud to hold in bars.
How I will aim to do this:
    ·      Try and visually show the fruits through illustrations of the fruit, colours of the fruits. To highlight it is a blend I will aim to combine bursts of colour that represent both fruits in a vivid way to make the bottle eye catching.  With using darker colours in combination with the burst of fruity colours, hopefully this will decrease the childish feel and also provide a strong contrast between the bright colours of the fruit- (emphasizing the burst of flavor in the drink)

    Audience:
Target Audience  25–35-year-old men and women who love getting together with their friends and family, both in and out of home. They are grown up, confident, have an established social network, and feel relaxed with those around them. They don't need alcohol to boost their confidence or lower their inhibitions and are happy to interchange between alcohol and soft drinks.

    Challenge:
redesign J2O to appeal to a target audience of 25-35-year-old men and women.
Make them feel proud to be seen holding J2O in bars, restaurants and at home, and should bring through J2O’s expressive, unpretentious and playful personality.

    ·      Design both our Orange & Passion Fruit flavour and our Apple & Mango flavour.
    ·      packaging designs for the 4pk packaging for each of these flavours.

    Considerations
    • Ensure that consumers know that J2O is a blend of two fruits.
    • The J2O logo and bottle shape drives consumer recognition so must be maintained.
    • The J2O brand is synonymous with the colour green that is on all of our packaging. Please make sure that it features in some capacity when coming up with design ideas.
    • In the past, the depiction of fruit on our packaging has increased taste credentials so although it's not compulsory to do so, bear this in mind when coming up with design ideas.
    • We would encourage you to visit bars, pubs and supermarkets to view J2O against its competitors to better understand the scale of the challenge.

Creative Requirements  Please share up to eight images in total showing your solution for individual bottles and four pack, along with supporting information that briefly articulates your idea in words (up to 400 characters)  Should you wish, you can also submit physical material such as prototypes and mock-ups etc.  We're also interested in seeing the creative process that led to your final idea. This can be hand sketches or alternative design directions you explored before selecting your final one.

How to Show your Work Digitally + Sending Supporting Physical Elements
All entries must be presented digitally, via our digital entry uploader. You should demonstrate your work in as much detail as possible. The best way to do this is to present it all in a single PDF with lots of big visuals and supporting written descriptions. Any related digital elements (such as films or animations) can be supplied alongside this PDF.

after i had cut out the moon shape and the man from the black paper, we had to cut out the exact same  shape moon but from a different white paper to sit against the not-so-black paper that the 'fedringoni' paper is covering. though we only needed a simple moon shape, it was very time consuming and tricky getting the exact same measurements. we decided to use tissue paper instead of a different type of white paper for the moon that sits against the not-so-black paper as it emphasis that the contrast of the ultra black fedringoni paper is much stronger and therefore makes the moon brighter.

what we had to think about when layering the sections.

    • making sure we dont hide the man under the fold.
    • positioning the man correcting to give the impression he is pasting the paper over the moon

photographing and touching up the photograph on photoshop.

    Wednesday, 11 March 2015

I have tested out cutting out a silhouette of a man rolling back the moon on a ladder, however me and Joe both agree that his stance isn’t quite right, especially his legs/feet.

though I will need to paper cut a different man, I am glad I have tried out the technique of paper cut here as I now know what to look out for and be careful with when cutting out the real thing, such as cutting out the moon- I need to remember to not cut out the full moon as the paper needs to be able to fold.

Joe testing the techinique of drawing the ladder and mans legs.

clearer direction after talking to fred.

after my first tutorial to fred i realised i was making my project to big for myself, this therefore made it extremely hard to think in terms of how, where, why and who the project/work was appropriate for as it was to broad.
after talking to fred i have simplified my idea of 'celebrating the everyday' to 'celebrating the everyday' by capturing unnoticed scenes we pass by everyday.
my idea is to photograph a number of moments without thinking about them, and from these images, find moments in them that i feel need to be celebrated/highlighted.
i aim to to this with tone of voice and choice of media. for example, to focus on a specific part of a image i will use a different media or simplify areas of the photography to emphasize the parts i want highlighting.
though photography captures moments, they capture the whole thing, giving little focus on important parts of the image.

    Cutting out Skyline and Embossing

though i was happy with our desing so far, i wondered weather we needed to add to our illustration to make the context of the moon in the sky more obvious, such as a skyline. i mentioned this to joe,  howeer he worried that this may over complicate the illustration and take away focus from the moon - this was true, however we diceided pose the wuestion to our peer reiew groups. can you tell we are illustrating the moon? - is this clear, or do we need to add to our illlustration to imply this?
though our group gathered this from our desing, they sugguested illustrationing extras such as crators on the moon to make it more obvious but in a suble way as to not detracrt from the moon.
adter discussion we came up with the idea of embossing a skyline silhouette into the black paper as this would be faint but recognisable therfore adding to the context. it also shows another cabablitly of the black paper thus advertising it further!.
we tested out different thicknesses of materials to see which one would work best to emboss onto the black paper, however we had to remember the material couldn't be thicker than a 2p. we decided on the card which is used to scrap off excess in the etching process as this was thick enough and did not bend easy.
i was asigned the job of cutting out the skyline from the card, this was a difficult process as it took a while for the scalpel to pierce though the card.
unfortunately because it took time and i was moving the card around to cu in different directions, i accidentally began to cut away at the negative space of the skyline (the part that was the block silhouette)

to solve this problem we had to find more of the card to fill the space of the paper we were printing onto so the shape of the skyline would be the only part on a different surface level and there would emboss.

we took it through the printing press onto the black paper several times until we were happy with our embossed paper.

how the work goes out into the world.

robyns feedback: i think alice stands out more on this one, but maybe the concept of her looking down the rabbit hole is not clear.

robyns feedback: maybe this one works better as a composition, it also represents the 'madness' of the book with the world wind of many visual aspects of the book surrounding alice.
