i remember seeing Hope Gangloff's work which really inspired me to experiment with a similar style. i like how he only using colour in certain areas which makes focal points to the illustrations. i also like how he created the impression of texture to clothing and hair which adds realism to the pieces. the textures juxtapose with the simple pen-line drawings of the figures, the use of negative space works well and does not over crowd the images.
i experimented with using the monochrome effect of pen line and the white of the paper to create the figure outline and add tone.
here i have added collage material to give the impression of texture to the clothing. after the tricky part of cutting out the collage material, once added it created the effect i was after -
- contrast between the figure and the clothing
- realism of clothing without having to hand draw detail.
