i really like the sketchiness of the first illustration, swell as the emphasis on exaggerated colours - i.e brining out blues and greens. however my style of drawing is dissimilar as would want my resolutions to maintain a realistic approach rather than cartoon. so i have used the second picture as reference in combination with the elements i like from picture one to experiment with my own illustration of a dragon below.

technique: i started off with a wash of water colour to build up a base which i then worked into with colour pencil and a little bit of fine liner - similar to the style the client pointed out to me from my previous work on my Facebook page he wanted these illustrations to be like. it is also i style i mentioned i wanted to develop in my rationale.
thought process: as i have always struggled with confidence and thinking negatively about my work, when i initially made the water colour base i couldn't see it developing into a style i would be happy with as it was very loose without structure. however after sticking with it and adding the detail with pencils, i could see the detail and realistic aspect i like to achieve coming through - hooray!
Feedback from client: style is what he had in mind, could possibly play around with making the dragon darker to make it more scary 'manly'.
i agree with this feedback, i did struggle to make the dragon look scary! i think by making the eye area darker especially and changing there shape slightly to give a angrier expression will hopeful achieve this!
i was also contemplating using silver/matalic pens around some of the details on the dragons skin- to add to the 'fairy tale/mystical' theme. i feel this will also make the drawings more appealing and exciting to children.
