process i began to develop towards the end of last year -detail figure work combined with  line building drawings.
plying around with illustrator to create simple line drawing of the houses of parliament to represent Churchill's memorable occupation of priminister during world war 2. i wanted to expand/ use the design style i began to develop during the last part of level two, combing detailed figures with line scenery to add the the context of the figure drawing. however this was a timely process, and i have seen line work of building being produced quickly with a similar effect using the trace image tool on illustrator- so i have experimented with this process above. this was very time consuming for me as i am an amateur with illustrator (have had to youtube everything!), however, once i have the hang of things i can see that this will be a much simpler way of getting effects i want in less time! as the product for this brief is a gift box and label, the design has to be visually engaging and stand out to customers, therefore i feel the subtle colours i used last year will not work to draw people into the product. i have experimented on illustrator adding gradients of colour to the line building - choosing the colours of the British flag to produce a Patriotic feel.
using image trace with technical drawing effect to create plan.

adding idea to gift box template.

  • adding British war plans to design to symbolise world war one that churchill was priminster through.

problems:

  • liked the look of it as a 2d flat image but after printing it out the effectiveness of the design was lost as only a small proportion the the illustration is seen (the front of the box) British army regiments
  • where to place block of colour - needed too outline churchill's figure however this left the majority of the design colourless - dull and also prone to marking if it was to be on a shop shelf.

experimenting with existing drawing of a scene to get a a feel of what a hand drawn line drawing would look like instead of the image traced houses of parliament used in previous development:

  • i feel the 2 styles work better together (figure drawing and line building drawing) as they have both been drawn in pencil.
  • played around with using colour burn on photo shop to show the gradient of the flag colours through the lines of the building thus adding colour to the design in the hope it will make it stand out
  • though this colour line work ties in with the plans, i feel it is still too subtle and the whole design does not jump out at you - possibly to complex, too much going on.

focusing on just the figure drawing:

  • feel this does create more of a focus on winston himself
  • experimenting with adding colour to liven up the design and to tie in with the patriotic theme.
further development needed:
  • like the idea of the subtle use of the flag added to churchill's bow - could develop this.
  • need to figure out the positioning of churchill and other elements to make the design work effectively when it is made into a box
  • do i used a different drawing of churchill?
