POSTER

we decided to deface the kcf sign we came across when searching for signs for our final poster as it is a ad that is over used a lot and on that we saw almost everywhere. the idea behind adding illustrations of pound signs in the eye of the mans glasses is to connote the main reason to every advert we see. to make money. any advert we see is not just there to look nice, they are only there for one thing, to make a lasting impression on us so we remember the product they are promoting and make us what to spend money on that product.
i like the subtleness of the pound signs in the add, as it is fairly symbolic of the subtleness of the averts purpose (to sell). i think the positioning of the pound signs is also quite clever as i feel the eyes are commonly associated with truth and personality, by covering them up and hiding them with pounds signs represents the coldness of advertisement and the false connection adverts try to have with viewers (friendly and caring) where in fact they don't think of you as a individual, they just care about where your spending your money.
we also thought by making the pound signs green also portrays the greed of corporation.

final giff

the software we used to create the giff was straight forward and i am fairly happy with the end result. however because the majority of my group, including myself, did not know how to use other editing softwares to create giffs, i felt the giff lacks refinement and i feel if we had more time we could of experimented and learnt how to use photoshop as this would of improved the visually quality of the giff. also we experienced problems with the timings of the slides in the giff, i personally feel the giff could be slowed down slightly so the viewer has enough time to read the slides and understand our points.
i am really happy with the still motion technique we used in the giff, i like how it shows us defacing the advert which i feel adds to our concept of what we connote in our heads/ what we imagine the signs to really say in our heads.

i think we have managed to convey a number of different messages and places 'bad advertisements' are used and seen which shows how easy and how regularly it is done.
from this project, it has opened my eyes to the amount of publicity is around and how we are bombard with it almost everywhere.

illustrator workshop 1.

illustrator creates amination software, editorial, designs for printing.

illustator and photoshop- cross over.

main differnence:-
illustrator:-
vectors based
blocky/shape. solid colour-  almost like contors on a map
Photoshop:-
pixel based -good for photos
resolution- pixels per inch
represent smooth grandually changes neatly
rule with resolution- PPI (pixels per inch)

vector illustrator - albery beardsly

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_graphics

use of geometrical primitives such as pointslinescurves, and shapes or polygon(s), which are all based on mathematical expressions, to represent images in computer graphics

zoom in on a image in photoshop-see individual pixels, blurred, you can see seperations of colour
zoom in on image in illustrator- clean line

setting up a document on illustrator

black arrow tool- section tool- bounded box, once highlighted (blue line box) can inlarge change scale up of down. if you want the proportion to stay the same hold down shift key.
rotate- go to corner get the 'banana' shape arrows and move to the rotation you want.

white arrow tool- direct selection tool- anchor points, little squares is filled when it is selected

using the white arrow tool- secting anchors allowing me to move the angle of the line

playing around with anchor points and handles on the curves lines

first shape- eclipse shape after altering shape by moveing the handles and actors, second shape- original ellipse shape

problems we encountered in this project.

though initially we thought the process of using and capturing advertisements around leeds would be straight forward, we came across a few stumbling blocks along the way.
such as-

  • finding the correct type of advert which showed all of the 'pants' things we hate about adverts
  • making sure we didn't draw attention to ourselves- this was hard as there was always people around, especially with shop signs, shopkeepers became very weary of us which meant we tended to spend less time getting perfect shots in the fear of being told leave etc.
  • adverts we wanted to work with had been replaced or moved- this happened with a primark advert we initially wanted to go back to with our personalised sign, unfortunately this had gone and therefore we were down a idea for our giff.
  • Not having the full group be able to make certain times so we could all contribute to the project

Creating giff

Creating giff
once we had all our pictures we had to add them to a giff maker.
this was time consuming as we had to make sure each picture was in the correct order to give the impression of a moving motion (film).
we also had to think about which images we wanted to keep and which to delete as we have a limit of 30 frames to use.

Going out and taking pictures with our signs

here paul took pictures of my placing the recreated 'so good'- 'so sexist' sign next to the original sign.

Going out and taking pictures with our signs

i took these pictures of Paul placing the pound signs over the kfc 'Connell'. i decided to take a lot of pictures to capture most of Paul's motion as he placed the signs and this would make for a more interesting stop motion giff and physically shows our thought process and how we alter the image in our heads to read as something different- 'pants'

other images taken by Becca.

i like how paul is smiling in these images, i think it adds to the ridiculousness we feel about the ads.

creating the signs

we wanted to make the signs as realistic as possible to the original sign, to make it look like our sign could easily be added to the ad and perhaps would not even be noticed until read closely. also i personally feel sometimes when you read/see something you think is 'pants' you automatically change  /rearrange the works or imaged in your head anyways, so this idea is really just a way to visually communicate what we might actually image the sign to say.

for the kfc sign, we wanted to recreate the elements of the 'so good' sign but change the wording to make our point.
we wanted to add a hand drawn, personal touch to the signs so i drew the logo of the kfc to match the original sign.

then digitally we recreated the text, researching into the fonts used on the kfc sign and copying the colours to make our sign look as similar as possible.

these are the other printed signs/ messages we will be holding up next to other adverts.

Etching workshop

etching process :
i have only done dry point etching in the past so i was intrigued to find out what was different to this
process and what the results look like.

these are a few examples we were shown.

our tutor explained to use that the dark and light tones are achieved by how long the ink is exposed to the the acid.
i think this eagle etch is beautiful with the amount of intricate detail.  seeing the results you get from etching, made me see that this process may be beneficial for me as you can create this amount of detail (what i like to achieve)

Final depth sketch for etching workshop

this is my final composition sketch i wanted to make each ballerina to be in different pose to make the illustration more dynamic. i have also kept in mind foreground, mid ground,  and background.
