Development - experimenting with colour backgrounds and drops of colour in pencil illustration.
i also played around with adding drops of colour to the sign and the traffic cones as these were the things that drew me to the initial photograph and made me choose this one to illustrate out of the others.
i was worried that this added technique would stop the rest of the illustrations existing as a recognisable set as i hadn't incorporated digital colour like this in the others. however because i have used digital colour in some way in the rest of the illustration i think they still work as a recognizable body of work!.
i found it hard to settle on a overall background colour for this illustration. unlike the others, the main element to this photograph was the blue sky, so thought this would be a good colour to use however i had trouble finding the right tone and opacity that did not distract attention away from the illustration. i played around with using the orange from the traffic cones that is a distinctive colour from the image but this was far to contrasting!
i showed will the illustration with the blue background and the illustration with the grey. he preferred the grey and so has chosen this one to feature on his website. however i personally prefer the blue just because i feel this maintains my concept of visualizing and interpreting elements and atmosphere from the photograph i was working from and the surroundings at the time the photo was taken.
