future collabarations and creative partnership

throughout this brief, me and Will (photographer) established a strong working relationship and have the potential to continue our collaborations after university, we are planning a joint promo pack to send off to galleries in the local area about our Bradford project. This pack can be used to promote our work to other places, to showcase out reportage creative partnership.

A creative partnership/continued collaboration is something i am very interested in as i feel it will keep my motivation and keep my on track after university when we have to fend for ourselves. knowing there is someone else who is in my position (new graduate) and wants to keep in touch with the creative industry and be a successful practitioner is very comforting and reassuring.

Will Kneeshaws (client) Bradford project Website featuring my Illustrations

photographers website which showcases my illustrations - LINK

It was initially anticipated that the illustrations would exist as an interactive element on a website, for example clicking on a section of the map would reveal an image, photograph or illustration, relating to that place. This aspect of the brief was something I had not done before, so provided a challenge needing me to consider elements of my work which usually do not concern me, such as the resolutions of my images etc. However, the final website changed from our original idea, the final site is simple and clear and focuses on showing the images in a thematic way rather than having them hidden and only on view when the map was engaged with.

This brief involved us reaching an artistic agreement to ensure my work was clearly acknowledged in his final show piece and on the website with links to my website and other illustration work.

websites blurb explaining project:
The aim of this project is to document the journey of me as a photographer becoming more familiar with a place, to ignore what the media says about Bradford and to understand the city through experiences. Meeting people, chatting, taking pictures of both a composted reality and a candid one. This is demonstrated through the genre of street photography. The need to become more familiar with Bradford has stemmed from family links in the city, as most of my family is from Bradford. With the main aim being to have a deep understanding of the city, I hope that the work will show a different side to Bradford. Show what life is like in the city, and  be a body of work that has a traditional social documentary twist as well. The project is ongoing, constantly evolving into something bigger and more refined. The more I photograph the more I learn about the city and myself as a photographer.

websites blurb explaining my involvement on the 'illustration' linked page:
Rebecca Williamson worked with the photographs I captured to create illustrations. Rebecca took the focal points of the images she found most interesting and drew them in incredible detail, this process naturally draws the eye to these areas. Something that my images cannot. Rebecca also used a colour from the image that stood out and filled in the background, further linking the illustration to the original image. Rebecca's illustration has brought a diversification to the Bradford project. Seeking out elements of the images and creating illustrations that bring character to the subject in a unique way that differs to the images yet still manage to fit in the documentary genre.

a quick mock up placement of illustrations to describe hazels story - more quotes and images to be added.
  • need to move images (house especially) out of the face slightly as it is hiding detail of portrait
  • the colour of the house which covers the face is to contrasting
  • the subtle black and white drawings are most effective with subtle drops of colour in certain areas - i.e the bird

Place Photograph illustration - experimenting with drops of colour within pencil illustration

Development - experimenting with colour backgrounds and drops of colour in pencil illustration.

because the building was white and did not have that much texture to detail, it meant there was no real focus of detail to this piece unlike the others. so i experimented with exaggerating parts of the text in the car sign in the images to interpret how these were a main focal point of the image for me.

i also played around with adding drops of colour to the sign and the traffic cones as these were the things that drew me to the initial photograph and made me choose this one to illustrate out of the others.

i was worried that this added technique would stop the rest of the illustrations existing as a recognisable set as i hadn't incorporated digital colour like this in the others. however because i have used digital colour in some way in the rest of the illustration i think they still work as a recognizable body of work!.

i found it hard to settle on a overall background colour for this illustration. unlike the others, the main element to this photograph was the blue sky, so thought this would be a good colour to use however i had trouble finding the right tone and opacity that did not distract attention away from the illustration. i played around with using the orange from the traffic cones that is a distinctive colour from the image but this was far to contrasting!

i showed will the illustration with the blue background and the illustration with the grey. he preferred the grey and so has chosen this one to feature on his website. however i personally prefer the blue just because i feel this maintains my concept of visualizing and interpreting elements and atmosphere from the photograph i was working from and the surroundings at the time the photo was taken.

FINAL RESOLUTION BOARDS FOR STUDIO BRIEF 4: APPLIED WEDDING INVITATIONS

Adding colour to Pigeon man: street illustration

experimenting with colours that i see present in photograph for background

Decided background colour
i've decided on this one as it is the main colour i pick up from the photograph and therefore visually describes the scene.
though i was intially happy with the pigeon man with a white background, i think the colour really completes the images and draws attention to the detail of the face and pigeons. the chosen composition also is more appreciated when the colour is added.

i really like the subtly of this layout, i think if i make more motifs that would fit into this layout it would work.
like my last development when i added colour, i think i wil add it to odd motifs in this layout- i think it will add a lighthearted and more postiive feeling whilst bringing the price to life and drawing attention to certain motifs (parts of persons life)

one problem i was thinking about with this idea was how it would work with the couple i am illustrating - merging the motifs together to symbolise their memories and life together like this could work?

Jean and Roland

Roland:
in the services - transported fuels and oil
fireman
builder

in the services i used to drive a 10 ton wagon transporting fuels, oils and lubricants for vehicles. if we were going on a scheme you'd maybe have to be away a week or fortnight at a time so you had to keep going getting loaded up, and fetch it all back again. it was just me driving, they were long days and nights. i also drove a big cols Crain for a long time.

it had a cage with a lock on so nobody but me could get in it.

i would drive the cols grain and then a mate of mine, woudl drive the wagon itself that the crain was on,  so i said right, when i give you a pip, my gibes down,  and you can move away.

changing colour slightly

though i needed to keep to the blue colour scheme the client asked, i thought the saturated brighter blue with the pencil contrasted to much and made the design quite tacky? i've lowered the saturations, on the second design, and think this looks more sophisticated, and professional which is the criteria stated in the brief.

mocking up individual flowers from wedding design

i decided to apply the flowers to other promotional/commercial materials to make the most out of the brief.
though i am not 100% happy with some of the flowers, i think some of them would work really well in a set of (bland ) greeting cards. i am considering putting them on etsty and showing them to art shops (eg lunesdale arts and framing who told me to go back to them with card mock-ups i could sell in their shop.

staff invited design layout

the client pointed out that she would be mounting this onto grey card to put up in her work place, so i used the background of purple so the grey would work as a boarder.

developing portrait ideas

this was the stage i was at with my practical development when we had a group tutorial on Tuesday,
i was at a creative block, though drawing 3-5 portraits seems straight forward, trying to communicate my experience of meeting with each elderly person and tell their life story in a  creative and new way was really hard!
as i have done documentary/ reportage illustrations communicating peoples stories in previous projects such as COP 3 - illustrating an organ recipients life, i was proving difficult to try and come up with a new way to visually tell a story, though i really liked the way i did it on previous projects, i didn't want to copy it as it wouldn't show any development.

developing on croped versions of portrait. - doesnt work showing ful face as much as sections of the face!

i like the layout of this piece and i could see it fitting as a poster piece.
however, their is something that is missing, the combination of the detailed portrait and detailed objects just isn't working how i could want and and i just cant put my figure on why!.

experimenting with adding watercolour to pencil drawings
i like the way this has turned out, not sure how it will look when combined with pencil portrait.

dont know weather it looks to contrasting? distracting attention from the face.
the digital colour added to the cows definitley doesn't work!

from discussions with Fred, he said that my stronger work lately has been when i have added colour/ not had a lot of white space around my illustrations. however, as i want this project to be communicate a subtle, and natural feel which doesn't reply to much on digital manipulation to maintain a original and authentic quality, i have played around with adding a light colour.
i really like this colour, i think its more soothing on the eyes then a bright white. i also like that it adds a vintage feel to the portrait- adding to the concept of time/elderly/history.

thinking about whats to communicate life stories:

i really really really like finding drawings like this on pinterest, i think its very expressive and authentic- which is really weird because i cant personally work in a sketchbook but this is the type of work that really exsites me when its done right. i always worry that i will waste my time in a sketch book if it doesn't go right.
i want to experiment with making more expressive work, i think it will be an idea way to show emotion and my experience of meeting the elderly people inside their detailed portrait.

i really like the idea of incorporating text as a illustration like the first reference image about.

a quick sketch to get an idea!

the added background colour withe the coloured plan works a lot better as the background makes reduces the contrast.
i played around with a more sketchier, reportage style of illustrating my experience of speaking to john instead of drawing from reference which i think is the problem with the previous illustrations i added to the portrait (above) which come across quite flat and unexpressive.
i think the added colour brings the portrait more alive and adds personality to john.

my main worry and problem to overcome with this project was giving it a direct purpose. though i new it was to give elderly people a personality, Patrick suggested i apply it to a existing charity campaign.
i have decided my main priority with these pieces is to is to visually document my experience meeting each elderly person. communicating what they have told me about their lives, and the emotion and atmosphere that i felt when hearing their stories and getting to know them.

By drawing things to summarise a particular part of the persons life (eg a rugby ball to show johns love he had for playing and now watching the game) this will resinate with people who are also fan with rugby, forming a common group and conversation starter that someone could have with a elderly person - helping to tackle looniness and isolation within the elderly generation as my piece will hopefully urge a person to start a conversation or visit a elderly person, remembering that they have had interesting lives and hobbies and are not all the same.

As i want my work to bring awareness to elderly people and the issue of isolation, i propose to apply my illustrations to a campaign for a charity.
at the moment Age uk have a project/campaign to 'combat loneliness' which i colour apply my illustrations to campaign awareness materials such as post cards, posters.

however my main aim and drive for this project is for them to exist to sit in a exhibition.
so saying this i could apply the illustrations to flyers and promotional materials for it.

detailed original face portraits of elderly people i met

hazel

john

constance
Roland and Jean

i drew each head on a a3 piece of paper as large as i could, i then planned, like i have done for jean and Rolands portrait above, to draw the outline of the bodies and digitally editing them both together if the process i decided to take the portraits into required a outline of the body.

setting manageable work load (hopefully)
though above i have drawn (started to draw) 5 people, and have interviewed at least 6, after tutorials and realising how much time each portrait has taken me and how long labour intensive the other development ideas have taken me to create a portrait with elements of the indiviuals story I've decided to focus on 4 people - 1 man (john), 1 woman (Hazel) and a couple. i think this gives me a good balance and showcased a diverse range of elderly lives. By setting myself a specific number of people and projects to deal with i hope i will be able to manage my time better and be more selective and direct developing each portrait with the same technical idea in order to keep a coherent set of portraits and body of work.
