altering illustrations to avoid spotting photo references

The main problems I encountered were drawing from imagination, having no source of reference when the client had a firm idea of what they wanted depicting from their imagination. I didn’t want to do it wrong or disappoint him, even though I know he liked they style of other work I had done. This made me worried about sending work, or apprehensive when I didn’t get a quick reply.

i knew working from reference gave me the reliability and confidence as it provides me guidance that i can compare my illustrations to.

however, this was a problem when used reference that were spotted my peers in crits. i really need to try and trust my imagination and loosen up when producing work - i need confidence in my ability to draw fee hand especially when the work i am producing does not need to have a point of reference.

to try and shake the connection to the reference material, i used photoshops liquify tool to alter the shape of faces and bodies in my illustrations. it was hard for me to do as i had put effort into the realism of the illustration and worried i would loose the quailty of line. however  i knew it was necessary and i think i managed to make subtle changes without doing loosing quality.
