interim evaluation of module progress so far

though i am slightly worried that i have only completed one brief fully, i feel i have been steadily working on the others enough to now focus on and complete.  i have been steadily working on both brief 2: documenting bradford and brief 3: childrens book. both these briefs require alot of work which is why they are taking me so long to complete.

Brief 1: winston churchill
initially i thought this brief would be really straight forward as it just required a gift box design and a label design, so much so, Teresa suggested i aim to extend the brief to make it more substantial . however, the format i had to work to turned out to be more difficult then i anticipated and the brief began to be very time consuming as i had to think of a design that would work for such a specific format. i ended up experimenting a lot with my technique and composition until i was happy with the end result.

 brief 2: documenting bradford:
is heavily reliant on the client as to when i can work on it as i rely on him for his photographs for me to draw from. this is quite annoying as its been a very slow process so i don't feel i am getting very far. however, now that this project (brief) will be the clients (wills) main area of focus i am expecting the process to pick up so i am glad i have completed some elements of the brief so i will not be bogged down with all the work all at the same time.

Brief 3: childrens book:
i have only recently started to progress with the brief. honestly, the longer i had left it the less i had wanted to do it as the type of brief is out of my comfort zone (aimed at children, having to think about storyboarding).
however after discussions with the client and clarifying the direction i will take the illustrations in (more singular illustrations than storyboarding and visually describing the whole scene) i feel a lot more confident in putting my own spin on a children's book illustration instead of sticking to the expected.
i have produced 3 out of the 10 pages so far - these have taken me a lot of time! (1/2 Days per illustration!) i need to work out how to reduce the time i spend on each to justify the amount of money i am getting paid for them. i also need to remember i have other briefs i need to be working on and stop giving myself unrealistic goals.

brief 4:wedding:
i have done a little experimenting with aesthecially pleasing designs so far which i really enjoyed as it didnt require extensive research and i could just play around with experimenting.
as this isn't a vital brief for the client, i want to try and develop the brief to apply to bot just her as the client- but to exist as a commerical merchandice that other couples could use on their wedding day.
i want to develop a patter/illsutration that i would be able to apply onto a range of products

table names
invitations
menus
rsvp
bunting
table clothes
fridge magnets
save the dates
confetti

i want to try and make this brief a quite turn around to take the pressure off myself seen as though my other briefs are very time consuming.

brief 5: branding
i have only done contextual research so far for this brief as i was unsure weather to swap this brief for another.
however after taking with peers and my dyslexia support tutor, they suggested this brief allows me to focus on a element of illustration that i have not yet look at (branding) and requires me to simplify my work ethic which will challange me.

childrens book development.

'next he went to the sweet shop. 'do you sell toffee apples' he asked the man in the shop 'oh yes', replied the man, 'i make them myself' and he showed the beggar some toffee apples about the size of a real apple.'
the intial scan of the illustration needs a background to distinguish the sweet jars from the wall so i added a digital colour.

experimenting with digitally multiplying drawing to create a more detailed and fully representation of a sweet shop.
though i am using the same technique as the other illustrations i have been producing for this brief, this illustration just doesn't seem strong enough or have as much visual quality and i cant put my finger on why as i have spend a lot of time on it.
i think the digital colouring distracts from the hand rendered quality.

i played around with adding more detail to the sweets in the jars and the shelves they sit on. i think this looks better then the original illustrations, but i'm still not 100% happy.
i have used fine liner to add the detail to the sweets as colour pencils were not giving me enough detail or contrast, i have not really used fine liner in the other illustrations so i'm also worried that this illustration will look like the odd one out and the illustration wont exist a consistent whole.

REVISED BRIEF

BRIEF TITLE- Illustration with 3d elements of Bradford and surrounding areas.

Brief

Client: ‘One of the outcomes for my extended practice will be a website that will give easy access to the images taken whilst documenting the city and the area. The map will be an interactive element where you will be able to move your curser over areas and see the images as well as click on the area to view several images.’

Create hand drawn maps, with key landmarks, which need to be in 3d from images sent from client of specific areas of Bradford. colour or black and white will be discussed with client at later date.

The concept of the idea is to produce an interactive element that viewers can use to get to know the city of Bradford. My proposed idea is to create an illustration of the map of Bradford and surrounding areas. The map will have layers of detail, beginning with a simple front, with shapes outlining areas of Bradford. Then progressing into a more 3D depiction of areas with elements illustrated in more detail (possibly colour). These areas will be located in areas in which I (the photographer) have taken images of people and place.

Updated brief after discussion with the client
The aim will be to have these specific areas interactive. As the curser hovers above the viewer can click on a link that will drop them into another layer. This layer will contain an illustration that has been directly influenced by the the images I (the photographer) have taken, and then finally the images that shows the indexical reality of Bradford. This will help the work created to be sympathetic and objective, showing the way that artists from different disciplines have interpreted Bradford.

first Intended briefs... where am i upto?....should i change some?

Brief 1: winston churchill
i have already met the deadline for this brief! so at least that is one out of the way...however i could develop on the deliverables as Teresa suggested to make it a more substantial brief... although i do feel i spend a significant amount of time developing my concept and technique with this brief already.

Brief 2: Bradford map
i have started this brief tackling the part i was least looking forward to , the maps. i am now waiting on photographs being sent to me by the client to draw the building and people to depict a more intimate documentation of bradford.

Brief 3: Children's book
as i have agreed this brief with my client and he is a paying customer i cant change this brief.... even though i wish i could now! i am worried that it will be very difficult for me to produce a children's book which has such precise (descriptive) scenes as i am used to drawing from reference or singular objects that require detail. however, the client knows my style and has pointed me to certain pieces of work i have done (which are singular objects/people) that he likes the style of... so i have messaged him my idea of how to produce the pages, depicting certain objects/people in the scene, instead of all of the scene to see if he is ok with it.
after discussions with patrick, he feels that the whole scene doesn't need to be depicted anyway as the writing with allow you to imagine the scenic, the images are just a prompt.

brief 4: Wedding merchandise
i have only done a few development pieces with this brief, and as it is something i am doing for my sister's wedding (not asked for or paid for) it is technically one i could loose if another brief came up, however i was looking forward to a brief that is aesthetics driven and did not require a heavy amount of research.

Brief 5: branding
i was asked to produce a van design, web design business card design etc for a local tradesman, however this was not a urgent or particularly important brief so could be one i could do later in the year if another brief came up.

As the majority of these are client based with loose briefs that i could have some freedom with, i wasn't sure weather choosing another competition brief would be useful for diversity and stricter requirements (to push myself)

taking the manuscript and simplfying scenes down into a image/character/place to best visual page.

I started by taking the manuscript and identifying key stages in the story to pinpoint with a person or scene that would work as a spot illustration that would describe the whole page of text. I looked for references to work from things that triggered my imagination. I created a Pinterest board to capture lots of images which may have worked in the scenes, working on these until I decided on one image as the focus. This worked well, allowing me to merge ideas from various sources, creating clear, usable images.

Table name ideas

My Clients wedding themes revolve around nature and country, i really like the idea of illustrating straight onto or printing onto pieces of filed down bark to add to the theme.... this would be a process i wouldn't know how to attempt however. if i was to do them all by hand, this would be a very time consuming process.
