detailed bradford map

Will had development ideas on how he would like me to illustrate the maps after he had a progress tutorial... this was quite gutting as i had already completed one of the maps so feared he would want to do alter or do the whole thing again! luckily, the map he had ideas for was the one i was about to start (detailed bradford map).
initially he wanted me to highlight/ illustrate certain building or places in the map that he has photographed or visited during his project. however, he now has the idea to keep the map simple with just place names and roads. this change of mind came about after we discussed my way of working - detail, and how if i put a lot of detail into drawing the building on the map they may get loads within it and the appreciation is lost, therefore he wants me to illustrate these certain places separately and they will appear when you hover the mouse over the certain area they are on the map.

bradford map with detailed road and place names
again, this map took me a long time. this map required more detail in terms of roads and road names, i considered adding tone like the last map but their as no specific area of tone on the actually photographic map and i felt because it is a busy map anyways, adding tone would add more complexity to it.

i split this map in 4 sections and focused on one part at a time. i also did this because i wanted to add as much detail as i could as will explained to me how he planned to print them off at a large scale for his exhibition.

because i had already do a big map in this type of style, the process was very long and becoming boring, though i am happy with the way they look, their was no room for me to be creative with the illustrations as Will wanted them to be as realistic, simple and descriptive as possible.
however though i wasn't able to be creative and develop a style much with these, i knew i was able to do that with the main figure/place illustrations for the project  - these were just for context.

ideas for zoomed in/more detailed map or Bradford.

i was feelinf a bit outfaced by how much detail I 'could' ad , felt I had to add everything to really communicate the place.

Contextual ref : I like how these map illustrations show the main building points on the map (much like what the client wants highlighting in my map) without having to draw every other surrounding buildings in the same detail.

surrounding areas of bradford - map

the process of creating this map was very VERY time consuming and quite tedious at time! however i am happy with the result, i am glad i decided add tone to certain areas, i think this adds depth to the piece and creates a contrast from the lines.
will wanted the map in black and white, he wanted to later decided on adding colour digitally to places that he took photos.
